Family houses, and a dog alone in a quiet street
Bertrange is residential, green and comfortable: estates of family houses, gardens, schools, and the Belle Etoile at the centre of everyone's errands. It is a commune people move to for space, and a great many of those households have a dog.
What I see here is the classic commuter pattern. Two adults leaving before eight for the city or the Kirchberg, children at school, and a dog whose entire day is a silent house and a garden it stopped finding interesting years ago.
Where we walk
The green corridors and field paths. Bertrange has real open ground on its edges: paths between fields, hedgerows, long sight lines, and very few people during the working day. Excellent for dogs with energy and for long-line recall work.
The residential streets. Calm, wide and interesting at dog height, which is what matters. The right answer for older dogs, for puppies and for anything that has had surgery.
Towards the woodland on the northern side. For sixty-minute walks, shade in summer, soft ground in winter and proper sniffing.
Things worth knowing here
- Agricultural land. Field edges are wonderful walking and come with ticks, grass seeds in summer and, at certain times, machinery and livestock. Dogs stay on a lead near either
- Shopping centre traffic. The roads around the Belle Etoile are busy at predictable hours and are not walking routes. Everything happens on the residential side
- Gates and garden fencing. Checked each visit and noted. Houses with children are also houses where gates get left open
- Distance. Bertrange slots are grouped geographically, so your walk is not shortened because the previous one was in Bonnevoie
The usual booking
Weekday midday walks, often five a week in term time, plus holiday and overnight care during school breaks. Households with two dogs are common here; dogs from the same home are walked together, which is the only group walking I do.
