How the matching works
Each answer is compared with our ratings for each breed. Space, energy, experience, children, time alone and coat care count most, and a breed that fails badly on one of them is pushed down, however well it does on the rest. The three best matches come with the reasons for them and the catches we would want to know about.
The quiz covers all 198 breed guides, from the Chihuahua to the Tibetan Mastiff. If you are choosing for a family, read choosing a breed that fits your actual week as well, and talk to people who live with the breeds you like.
Questions
How accurate is the quiz?
It is a structured guess. We rate every breed on energy, grooming, flat life, experience needed, children, time alone, noise and prey drive, then compare those ratings with your answers. The ratings are averages from breed standards and our own experience, and individual dogs vary a lot.
Does it work for rescue dogs and crossbreeds?
Only loosely. A rescue crossbreed does not follow a breed chart, so look at the individual dog and ask the shelter how it behaves in a home. The questions are still a useful way to think about your life.
Is my information stored?
No. The quiz runs in your browser and nothing you answer is sent to us. The link you can copy only contains your answers, so you can share it or come back to it.
Why are some breeds marked with a warning about Luxembourg law?
Luxembourg's law of 9 May 2008 names the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Mastiff and the Tosa. Owning one needs a certificate and a ministerial authorisation first. Read the rules.
