Building a recall you can actually rely on

Your dog comes back in the garden. That is not recall. That is a dog with nothing better to do.

Every other cue is convenience. Recall is the one that stops a dog on the edge of a road, pulls it away from a deer in the woods above Luxembourg City, and ends an encounter with a dog who was never going to be friendly. It is also the cue most owners train badly, not through laziness but by making four specific mistakes that are entirely avoidable.

Why recall breaks down

A dog decides between two options: what you are offering and what it is already doing. Sniffing a hedge, chasing a squirrel and greeting another dog are all rewarding activities, and they are happening right now. If your call is worth less than the hedge, the dog is not being disobedient, it is being rational.

Four habits make it worse. Calling only when the fun stops, so the word comes to mean the walk is over. Calling for things the dog dislikes: a bath, nail clipping, the lead going on before the vet. Repeating the cue five times, which teaches the dog that the first four mean nothing. And telling off a dog that came back slowly, which punishes the returning rather than the leaving.

The word only ever predicts something good. The moment it becomes ambiguous, you have to build a new one.

Pick a word and protect it

If the current word is already spoiled, and you will know because your dog ignores it in the garden, choose a new one and never use it casually. Many people prefer a whistle: it sounds the same whether you are calm or panicking, it carries further, and the dog cannot hear frustration in it. Two short blasts, always the same pattern.

Whatever you pick, the rule is that the cue is used once. If your dog does not respond, you have made the exercise too hard, not the dog too stubborn, and the answer is to go back a stage rather than to shout.

Building it, stage by stage

Stage one, at home

Say the word in a quiet room when your dog is already coming towards you, and pay generously. You are teaching an association, not testing obedience. Twenty repetitions across a few days, with food your dog does not otherwise get.

Stage two, small distractions

The same exercise in the flat with the television on, in the corridor, in the courtyard. Distance stays short, the dog always succeeds.

Stage three, the long line

This is the stage most people skip, and skipping it is why recall fails outdoors. A long line of five to ten metres, attached to a well-fitted harness rather than a collar, gives you the real environment with none of the risk. Let the dog explore, call once, and pay when it arrives. If it does not come, use the line gently to prevent the dog rehearsing the choice to ignore you.

Work at this stage for weeks, not days, across different places: a quiet park, a forest track, a riverside path, somewhere with other dogs at a distance. Your dog should be returning enthusiastically in all of them before the line comes off.

Stage four, off lead, in easy places

Choose enclosed or genuinely safe areas, away from roads, at quiet times. Call frequently and let the dog go again immediately most of the time. Recall must not mean the end of freedom, or the dog will start to weigh whether to come.

The payment scale

Dry biscuit does not compete with a squirrel. Recall is paid with the best thing you have: cheese, roast chicken, liver paste, and for some dogs a tug toy or a thrown ball matters more than food. Keep that reward exclusively for recall, so it retains its value.

Pay every single time in the first six months, then move to paying most times, unpredictably. Unpredictable reward maintains behaviour better than a schedule, but only after the behaviour is solid. Stopping too early is the second most common cause of a recall that worked last summer and does not work now.

The emergency recall

Train a separate signal you use perhaps five times a year: the dog heading for a road, a hunting dog crossing the path, a cyclist coming fast around a blind corner. Condition it deliberately, a different whistle pattern or an unusual word, and pay it with something extraordinary every single time, even in practice, even when nothing was wrong.

Practise it twice a month in easy conditions and never use it to end a walk. Its power comes entirely from never having been spent on anything ordinary.

Luxembourg conditions worth knowing

The forests and river paths around the city are excellent training ground and contain deer, foxes and boar, which is precisely the competition your recall has to beat. During the hunting season, respect the signs and keep dogs close on the marked routes.

Remember too that a good recall does not remove the lead obligations, which begin the moment you leave your own front door and continue through the corridor, the lift, any shared car park and public transport. Municipal parks and playgrounds add their own posted rules, whatever your dog's training is like. Off-lead freedom is for open ground, not for the pavement outside the building.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling when you know the dog will not come. Every ignored cue weakens it. If in doubt, go and get the dog quietly
  • Chasing a dog that will not return. Dogs run from a chase. Turn and jog the other way, and most dogs follow
  • Angry tone. The word should always sound like an invitation
  • Ending every recall with the lead. Call, pay, release, at least four times out of five
  • Trusting adolescence. Between about eight and eighteen months many dogs temporarily lose a recall that was reliable at six. Go back to the long line for a few weeks rather than arguing with biology

If your dog already ignores the word

Do not try to rescue it. Choose a new cue, go back to stage one at home, and be disciplined about never using the new word in a situation where you cannot make it work. Most owners rebuild a usable recall in six to eight weeks with ten minutes a day, and the single largest predictor of success is whether the long line stage was done properly.

Testing it honestly

A recall that works in the garden is not a recall. Before you trust it near a road, test it three times in conditions you have not trained in: with another dog at twenty metres, with the dog mid-sniff on an interesting patch, and at dusk when visibility is poor.

Score it as a percentage rather than a feeling. Nine out of ten in an open field is not enough for a route beside traffic, and the honest answer for most dogs is that some environments stay on a long line permanently. That is a reasonable outcome, not a failure.

What a walker should be doing

If someone else walks your dog, recall is one of the things they can support or quietly wreck. A walker who calls your dog repeatedly and then does nothing is teaching it to ignore the cue. Tell your walker which word you use, whether the dog is permitted off lead at all, and ask them to use the same reward. At PAWLY off-lead is never assumed: it happens only where you have agreed it in writing, and the report says how the recall was on the day.
