Write down the boring days

Everything that goes wrong with a dog arrives without a sentence attached. Somebody has to keep the record.

Everything that goes wrong with a dog arrives without a sentence attached. No animal tells you that its hip started hurting in October, that it has been drinking more since the holidays, or that it stopped enjoying the hill three weeks ago. It simply behaves differently, slightly, and waits to see whether anybody notices.

The gap between that and a diagnosis is filled by a human being with a memory, which is the weakest part of the whole arrangement.

Why memory fails here specifically

Not because owners are careless. Because the changes are gradual and the observer is present every day.

You see your dog constantly, which means your sense of normal updates continuously and invisibly. A dog that takes four seconds longer to stand up than it did last winter is simply the dog you have. Two kilos gained over eight months is the shape it has always been. The walk that used to be an hour and is now forty minutes was shortened by you, in stages, for reasons that seemed sensible each time.

The people who notice these things are the ones who see the animal intermittently: the vet at the annual check, the friend who has been away six months, the groomer. They are comparing against a fixed point. You are comparing against yesterday.

The value of a written record is that it gives you a fixed point too.

What a record actually changes

Three things, concretely.

It converts impressions into dates. "He has been a bit off lately" is a sentence a vet can do very little with. "Limping intermittently since the 4th, worse after the long Sunday walk, no limp on the flat" is the beginning of an examination.

It reveals patterns that are invisible day by day. Appetite dipping every Friday. Stiffness the morning after the weekend hike. Loose stools the day after one particular chew. Nobody holds those correlations in their head; a list of four weeks shows them at a glance.

And it makes absence visible. A dog that has not defecated on three consecutive midday walks is information that only exists if somebody wrote down the first two.

The minimum version

This does not require an app or a spreadsheet. One line a day in a note on a phone, or a message thread between the people who look after the animal, covers nearly everything: what was eaten, anything unusual about toilet, how the dog moved, anything odd.

Add a weight every three months and a body condition check by hand every month, and you have a health history most dogs never get. Add the date whenever you remove a tick, notice a lump or change a food, and you have answers ready for questions that will be asked years later.

The part that is somebody else's job

For a dog alone during the working day, there is a hole in the record precisely where most of the day is. Whatever happened between eight and six is unobserved, which is also the window in which a dog that is unwell will show it first, because that is when it is awake and unsupported.

This is the real argument for a written report from anybody who spends time with your dog, and the reason a photograph is not a substitute. A photograph proves attendance. A sentence records an observation: that the dog was slower on the same hill, that it left food it normally takes, that it was watchful near the building works for the first time.

Those sentences are not interesting on the day they are written. They become valuable in the week when something is wrong and somebody asks when it started.

The habit, in one line

Write down the boring days. They are the baseline, and without them the unusual one is just a feeling.
