Fifteen thousand years of living alongside us has produced an animal that reads human beings better than any other species, including some of our closer relatives. Dogs follow pointing gestures, check our faces for information when a problem is unsolvable, and distinguish between a person who can see them and one who cannot.
That ability is charming when it produces a dog that knows you are about to leave. It is inconvenient when it means your dog is reacting to you rather than to the thing you thought it was reacting to.
The lead as a wire
Watch an owner who is anxious about meeting another dog. The sequence is always the same and it takes under two seconds: the person sees the dog first, their breathing changes, the hand tightens, the lead shortens, the shoulders come up, and the walking pace changes. The dog then discovers that something significant is happening, checks, and finds the other dog.
From the animal's side, the order of events is unambiguous. The human tensed, and then the other dog appeared. It is not a great leap for a dog to learn which predicts which.
This is why owners of reactive dogs so often describe a worsening that tracks their own worry, and why the same dog is frequently easier for somebody else to walk. The other person is not better with dogs. They simply have no history with the situation and their body does nothing interesting when a labrador appears at fifty metres.
The lead is not a neutral piece of equipment. It is a one-metre channel for information about your internal state, updated continuously.
What else is being read
Far more than most people assume. The particular sound of your keys in the evening rather than in the morning. The sequence of shoes, bag and laptop that predicts departure. Whether the coat you are putting on is the walking coat or the office one. The pitch of your voice when a visitor is welcome and when they are not.
None of this involves the dog understanding your day. It involves the dog noticing that a specific cluster of small signals reliably precedes a specific outcome, which is a thing dogs are extremely good at and humans are unaware they are producing.
The awkward implication
A good deal of what gets described as a dog problem is a loop with a person in it.
The dog that will not settle in the evening, in a household where somebody is checking their phone and shifting every ninety seconds. The recall that fails only when the owner is late and calling in a voice that has become sharp. The dog that is fine with visitors except the ones its owner dislikes. The walk that is tense every time it passes the corner where something once happened, because the owner has been tightening the lead there for a year.
None of this is a moral failing. It is what happens when a highly observant animal lives with an animal that broadcasts constantly and notices none of it.
What to change
Breathe out before the meeting rather than in. Let the lead stay loose if it is safe, which is the single hardest physical habit to acquire in this whole subject. Keep walking rather than stopping to watch the other dog, because stopping is itself a signal. Turn your body away from what you are worried about instead of facing it squarely.
On recall, listen to your own voice. Calling in the tone you use for the dog's favourite thing produces a different response from calling in the tone of somebody who has been calling for ninety seconds. If you are frustrated, go and collect the dog quietly instead, because each ignored cue spends a little of the word's value.
And at home, be boring at the door. Arrive, take your coat off, greet the dog a minute later. The calm is not withheld affection; it is the thing that lowers the temperature of the whole event for both of you.
The consolation
The same sensitivity that makes this difficult is what makes the arrangement work at all. A species that reads us this closely is a species that can be taught almost anything with food and patience, that notices when we are unwell, and that has made itself indispensable to people in flats in cities it was never designed for.
It simply means that when something is going wrong on the end of a lead, the first thing to examine is not always the animal.
